Afghan Rulers Used Abandoned British Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind confidential technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to track down Afghans that had served with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were advised to change residences and alter their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into the UK government's management of a massive disclosure of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to move to the UK to escape the regime.

How the Leak Happened

An electronic document with confidential details, including identities, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The incident became known only in August 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to move to the UK were posted on Facebook.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace your precise location. This is exactly how the unit achieved.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities owned advanced decryption, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the committee indicated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and associates of people concerned by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction about the leak was enacted in last year and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, Person A and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they relocate where feasible and changed their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities obtained this information, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

Person A disputed that government assessment conducted by a former official had been mistaken to conclude that the acquisition of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing abuse experienced by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get households to say where someone is,” she testified.
