Blue Jays On the Brink of Victory After Yesavage Dominates Dodgers in Game 5
Trey Yesavage delivered a performance for the ages and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Dodgers six to one on Wednesday, needing just one more triumph of their first championship since the 1993 season.
Yesavage's Historic Outing
The 22-year-old Yesavage, who only reached the big leagues in September, recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks – setting a new World Series record. The rookie right-hander allowed one run on three hits across seven innings. He began the year pitching before a few hundred fans in Class A ball, but has now earned two starting wins in the series in this seven-game set.
A Quick Start for Toronto
Toronto’s hitters provided early support. On the first pitch of the game, Schneider turned on a 97mph fastball and drove it over the left-field wall. Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr homered as well to nearly the same spot. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that the game began with two straight homers, leaving the audience in awe before most had found their seats.
The Pitcher's Dominance
Yesavage then went to work. He fanned five in a row between the early frames, establishing a new rookie mark before the streak was snapped by Kiké Hernández with a solo shot in the third inning to make it 2–1. That was the nearest the Dodgers came.
Extending the Lead
In the fourth, Varsho lined a triple into the right-field corner after a defensive mistake, and Clement delivered a sacrifice fly to score him for a 3–1 lead. The Dodgers' bats remained quiet from there. After a six-run output in an 18-inning game, they’ve managed only four across the past 29 innings.
Late Inning Insurance
The starting pitcher persisted for over six frames but was chased in the seventh after the bases became full. The runners he allowed both crossed the plate – thanks to a errant throw and one more on a base hit – to make it 5–1. A hit in the eighth provided the final margin.
Bullpen Secures the Win
Yesavage exited to a standing ovation from the traveling fans, and the relievers finished the job. The relief corps each pitched an inning without allowing a run to end the game, fanning three batters collectively while maintaining the stellar start.
Dodgers' Lineup Shuffle Falters
The Dodgers, who shuffled their lineup in search of a spark, again struggled to get going. Their key batter went 0-for-4 and is now without a hit in his last seven appearances since reaching base a World Series-record nine times in the third game.
Looking Ahead to Game 6
Now up 3–2, Toronto head back to their home ballpark with two opportunities to win it all. The sixth game is set for Friday at Toronto's ballpark.
