His passing occurred at his home, in the company of his family.

Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a cherished figure who demystified classical music for millions.

He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts in the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for productions such as The Golden Ring.

1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a contest instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
