Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years of Age
The world mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading reggae music across the globe. He has died at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit brought him a large and longstanding following.
Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
