New Zealand's Joseph Parker Confronts Imminent Ban Following Positive Anti-Doping Test

The New Zealand heavyweight returned an adverse finding during a doping test conducted the very day of his 11th-round defeat against British heavyweight Fabio Wardley.

The Match Plus the Consequences

Wardley together with Parker participated in a thrilling encounter held in London in late October to determine the next mandatory WBO contender to reigning heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.

The fighter was previously next in line to challenge Usyk following putting together an impressive six consecutive victories, but risked his shot at the title in jeopardy in London and suffered a stoppage in round eleven.

Failed Examination Plus Implications

A routine test conducted on Parker via the anti-doping organization the day he fought returned positive which leaves Parker facing a challenge to clear his name.

The boxer's representatives issued an announcement which read: "The anti-doping body notified everyone involved regarding Joseph Parker returned an adverse finding following a doping test carried out on the 25th October. While the matter is investigated, no further statements are planned at this time."

Professional History

Parker earned the title of titleholder back in 2016 before he surrendered his WBO belt through a points decision against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff in 2018.

Joseph Parker became a regular competitor on British soil since then, competing in eight bouts in total in Britain and moving to Dublin for preparation under respected coach Andy Lee in recent years.

Latest Events

Guided by Lee, the boxer recovered from his defeat in 2022 versus Joe Joyce to secure a string of victories which put him at the front of the line to challenge Usyk until he suffered defeat against Wardley.

Following Parker's sample showed a positive test when he fought Wardley, reportedly involving cocaine, an inquiry into the findings has been started.

  • The boxer failed a drug test for an illegal substance.
  • The screening took place via the anti-doping agency on the fight day.
  • Parker now faces a potential ban from boxing.
  • His representatives published a comment confirming the failed examination.
  • An investigation is currently ongoing into the matter.
