The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
