United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with Eleven Countries
The UK government has placed 11 new nations to its official alert register concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Just last month, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after multiple notable incidents like the deadly death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12β48 hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to identify.
Official Advice for Travellers
Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that every traveler should know the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official said.
"If something seems unusual, for example a hangover that's far more intense than normal or sight issues β get medical help right away."
The entire register of destinations identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
