UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
